Dutton is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Marjorie Schwarz. As suggested in the title, Schwarz's new paintings are a kind of "brown study." A condition of being so lost in solitary thought as to be unaware of one's surroundings; deep, serious absorption in thought or an abstracted state of absorption; gloomy meditation or melancholy - these are all states known as a brown study.
Brown Study, Schwarz's first solo exhibition in New York, features work which began alongside her recent studies in meditation. She discovered the state of painting and meditation to be almost interchangeable - both requiring an intensely sharpened, focused mind – draining and invigorating at the same time. Treating painting as meditation allows Schwarz to be able to forget about an approach to painting altogether, what she calls "low-impact" painting. And every moment gears shift to inhabit an exercise in either.
Schwarz received her BFA at Southern Methodist University in Dallas in 1999. Recent solo exhibitions include a current exhibition (Feature) at The Goss Michael Foundation, Dallas and Art Palace, Houston, 2015, Dutton, Texas Contemporary 2014, Dallas Art Fair 2014, Texas Contemporary 2012, Conduit Gallery Project Room, Dallas, and Plush Gallery, Dallas. Schwarz has taken part in numerous group shows that include Dallas Biennial 2014, The Brandon, Houston; Texas Contemporary, 2013; Dutton, New York; Fallas Dart Air, Dallas; James Harris Gallery, Seattle; CHAMPION, Austin; Inman Gallery, Houston; And/Or Gallery, Dallas: Angstrom Gallery, Los Angeles; The McKinney Avenue Contemporary, Dallas; and The Centre Pompidou, Paris.
